Safeguarding God’s Children is a training program for the prevention of sexual abuse of children and youth. The program is part of the Policy for Protection of Children and Youth in The Diocese of West Tennessee. Please consult Policies for the Protection of Children and Youth from Abuse for training and background check requirements.

The program consists of a video presentation and discussion. Video presentations provide a basic understanding of the dynamics of child sexual abuse, how to recognize signs that a child may have been abused, steps you can take to prevent child sexual abuse in church and other organizational settings and what to do if you have concerns about a person's behavior toward a child or youth, or if you suspect that a child or youth has been molested. Diocesan certificates are issued upon completion of the course. Criminal background check may also be required.

Space is often limited and registration is necessary to insure adequate resources are available. Please register in advance of the training. If you register after 12:00 (noon) on the day of a training, please call Canon Davis to alert him. Allow three hours for the entire course.

Application Forms

Parishes, institutions and schools are reminded that, in addition to fingerprinting or a background check, the person must complete an application of employment or an application designed for volunteers on the approved forms provided click here for an employee application or click here for a volunteer application .  The Diocese also requires the parish or school to check all references of the individual before beginning any work or volunteer activities. All results of fingerprinting,  background checks and applications should be placed in an employee’s personnel file and maintained for all volunteers.

NOTE:  ALL Employees of any parish/mission/institution/school and certain volunteers are required to be fingerprinted.  To see if a volunteer is required to be fingerprinted please see the Memo on Fingerprinting by clicking here.  Anyone who is fingerprinted according to the policy memo will not need to complete the Background Release Inquiry Form, unless they will be driving for the Church and a driving record check is desired.
