April 5 - May 18, Praying in Color Exhibit
St. George’s, Germantown, will host an exhibit of works by Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color, and prayer doodles by parish members from April 6 through May 18, 2008, in the St. George’s Art Gallery. Parishioners are being issued art paper and asked to provide illustrated prayers for the exhibit. It will open with a Reception on Saturday, April 5th from 5 to 7 pm at the church at 2425 S. Germantown Parkway. MacBeth will conduct a Praying in Color Workshop on Saturday, May 3rd, and the St. George’s Bookshoppe will host a book signing and reception on Sunday, May 4th.

April 14, Spiritual Assessments in Counseling
The Monday morning professional education seminar, “Using Spiritual Assessments in Counseling,” is April 14, 9am to noon, at Samaritan Counseling Centers’ Midtown Idlewild
Center, 35 S. Auburndale. Dr. Janet Schaller, SCC counselor and assistant professor of pastoral care at Memphis Theological Seminary, will lead it. Using a case study as
her basis, Dr. Schaller will explore three models of spiritual assessment, those of Dr. Paul W. Pruyser, the Rev. Dr. George Fitchett and the Rev. Dr. Wesley Brun. Clergy and

April 18, Music at St. Mary’s

April 19-20, Father Simon Harak
G. Simon Harak, S.J. is one of the most respected names in the peace movement. A Jesuit priest with a doctorate in ethics from the University of Notre Dame, he is a founder of
Voices in the Wilderness, which has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is presently the Director of the Center for Peacemaking and a teacher of
theology at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. A distinguished scholar in his field, he has published four books, most recently Nonviolence for the Third Millennium: Its Legacy and Future. He is both a well-informed and passionate voice for peace in Iraq. Saturday, the 19th at 4:30pm he will be preaching at Binghampton UMC, 258 N. Merton. Sunday, the 20th he will be teaching the “Adult Forum” at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Cathedral 700 Poplar Ave. Sunday, the 20th at 6:30pm Farther Harak will present a Power Point presentation entitled, “Jesus Living Under Occupation” at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1695 Central Ave.

April 19, Friends of Music Clarinet Concert
Carina Washington will present a clarinet concert at St. George’s, Germantown, on April 19 at 7:30 pm, accompanied on organ and piano by Dr. Angela Gill Saunders, Director of
Music at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Ms. Washington, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, has performed with the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish Philharmonics, Copenhagen Cantata Orchestra, and Norwegian State Army Band. Now a resident of Barlett, she is known in the Mid-South for her work with the Missouri Chamber Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony and Delta Symphony of Jonesboro and as co-founder of several chamber groups including prize winning Trio Linnea and Prizm Ensemble Memphis. Ms Washington and Dr. Saunders will be playing a Concerto in A by Wofgang A. Mozart, music by Guiseppe Verdi and Scandinavian composers. Friends of Music will host a reception following the concert.

May 3-4, Sybil Macbeth Praying in Color Workshop & Book Signing
Sybil MacBeth will conduct a Praying in Color Workshop on Saturday, May 3, from 9am to noon in the Parish Hall at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 2425 S. Germantown Road in Germantown. On Sunday, May 4, the St. George’s Bookshoppe will host a book signing of “Praying in Color” and reception for the author between church services from 9am to noon. Works by MacBeth and prayer doodles by parish members inspired by her techniques are currently on exhibit at the St. George’s Art Gallery through May 18. Diocesan friends are invited to join us for these activities.

May 9, Planting Faith Ministries Fundraiser
St. Andrew’s Collierville will gather in the gardens of Kitty and Neil Taylor to raise funds for Horace and Anna Tipton of Planting Faith Ministries. This year’s event will be Friday, May 9, from 6-8pm at 1600 Quinn Road, Collierville. The Tiptons have been in Kenya since 2005, helping farmers around Nairobi work to achieve sustainable agriculture. Visit their website at www.plantingfaith.org. Kitty and Neil Taylor have created a beautiful garden, which has been featured on many garden tours as well as on HGTV and Better Homes and Gardens magazine. May 10, Germantown Community Chorus Concert
The Germantown Community Chorus, who routinely rehearses at St. George’s Episcopal Church, will present a concert for the congregation on Saturday, May 10, at 7:30 pm followed by a reception hosted by the St. George’s Friends of Music. The concert, to be held at the church at 2425 Germantown Road in Germantown, is free and open to the public. The Germantown Chorus began as a summer program sponsored by the City of Germantown’s Parks and Recreation Department. They were asked to sing for civic functions in the summer of 1986. When the summer and funding ended, the group decided not to disband. Now, twenty years later, the group still sings and performs three to six concerts annually with volunteer singers from all over the Mid-South.

May 12, Mary Abbay Gourley Tribute Concert
? Mary Abbay was recognized among the most talented harp players in Memphis over the past 25 years. She performed with the Memphis Symphony, the Tupelo Symphony, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans in addition to numerous performances at Memphis churches and social events. She was also an ORFF teacher in the Memphis City Schools and performed with the Memphis Opera and touring Broadway Shows. With Jeanne Simmons, her long-time friend and performing partner, she was an artist in residence at Church of the Holy Communion in 2006. She passed away a year ago at the age of 47. Performances will be by Memphis’ most talented musicians, including Charles Billings, Kristin Lensch, Scott Moore, Marian Shaffer, Jeanne Simmons, Memphis City Schools Orff Ensemble, Memphis Symphony Orchestra players, Toscanini Chamber Ensemble, and choirs from Balmoral Presbyterian, Idlewild Presbyterian, Independent Presbyterian, Lindenwood Christian, and Church of the Holy Communion. The program will include special music from Mary Abbay’s life, including portions of the Gabriel Fauré Requiem and the premier of Le Reveil De L’ange by French composer Jean Sichler. Sichler wrote and dedicated this flute and harp score specifically for Mary Abbay and Jeanne Simmons. Simmons added, “there are so many people who have enjoyed Mary Abbay’s music over the years, and this evening will give them a chance to recall some of those wonderful moments.” The Mary Abbay Gourley Children’s Educational Trust has been set up to benefit Mary Abbay’s three children, David (15), Georgeanne (13), and Abbay (11). David Ouzts, Music Director at Church of the Holy Communion said that the Church will have the acclaimed CD, Sacred Impressions, featuring music by Mary Abbay and Jeanne, for sale the night of the concert, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Children’s Educational Trust. May 18, Memphis Men’s Chorale Evensong
The Memphis Men’s Chorale will present a Service of Evensong, Rite 1, at 7pm, Trinity Sunday, May 18th, at Calvary Episcopal Church. The program will include Randall Thompson’s lyric poem “The Last Words Of David,” Franz Beibl’s “Ave Maria,” Thomas Tallis’s well-known Tudor canticle “If Ye Love Me,” and the haunting Russian hymn (an MMC signature piece) “Spansyeniye Sodelal” (“Salvation is Created”). MMC consists of 30 professional and amateur male vocalists under the artistic direction of Matthew Bowlin and accompanist, Fred Bickel. The Memphis Men’s Chorale is an interdenominational male chorale based in Memphis, Tennessee, that performs a variety of both sacred and secular music. Episcopal Churches represented in the Chorale membership are: Calvary, Grace-St. Luke’s, Holy Communion, St. Elizabeth’s, St. Anne’s, Ravenscroft, and Holy Innocents. The group is under the leadership of Matthew Bowlin, artistic director. The Officiant for this service will be the Rev. Andy McBeth, rector of Calvary and member of the Memphis Men’s Chorale. Fred Bickel will be the accompanist.

June 9-13, “Power Lab” VBS at St. George's, Germantown
Power Lab will be fizzing with fun for kids ages 3-10. It will be held the week of June 9-13, from 9am to noon at St. George’s Episcopal Church at 2425 S. Germantown Road in Germantown.
